Transportation

Air

Comox Valley International Airport (YQQ) has the longest runway on Vancouver Island (10,000-foot) and is the second largest Airport on Vancouver Island. YQQ served over 420k passengers in 2018 from central and northern Vancouver Island with daily direct flights to/from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver onboard WestJet, Air Canada, and Pacific Coastal Airlines. Harbour Air provides direct and convenient harbour to harbour service between Comox Harbour and downtown Vancouver. Vancouver Island Air also provides charter service from YQQ to the Victoria.

Road

The Comox Valley is served by Provincial Highway #19A and the Inland Island Highway #19. The completion of the new highway has dramatically changed the economies of Island communities, making them more competitive and reducing both the time and costs of transportation. Most major freight companies are well represented in the Valley and two Valley-based fright companies offer services to Island points as well as the mainland.

Ferry Service

BC Ferries provides service to the Comox Valley with two significant routes. Service to the South of Courtenay is from the terminal located at Buckley Bay and connects to both Denman and Hornby Islands. Service to the mainland is available from the Little River Terminal with connections to Powell River. Frequent sailings, and amazing scenery make the BC Ferries routes to and from the Comox Valley an attraction in themselves. The Ferries provide reliable transportation for both resident commuters and local industry. Ferry service to Washington State can be obtained via Victoria.

Comox Harbour

The Comox Harbour has provided shelter for ships since the late 1800s. Back then, this safe and secure harbour was known as “Port Augusta”, then later “The Bay”. Now Comox Harbour is home to a large commercial fishing fleet as well as a sizable number of pleasure crafts. Harbour Air also provides direct floatplane flight service between the Harbour and downtown Vancouver in 45 minutes. Comox Harbour and the Slough in downtown Courtenay offer moorage for boaters visiting the Comox Valley. At the Harbour, guest floats are accessed around the East end of the breakwater. Information regarding local conditions, tide heights, and available services can be obtained from the Comox Valley Harbour Authority at (250) 339-6041.
